With monk main, a superior protection, +1 prot headpiece, and the +1 protection prayers icon outside of (I think) bloodstone fen, this spell's requirements can be downed to just 1 mp per hit.
Coupled with balthazar's spirit and/or essence bond, the cost can be eliminated altogether

i guess there are forms of dmg that get reduced by the bond but NOT picked up by essence bond or life bond. ele dmg that is, i guess
so the trick with the no nrg loss might ONLY work on yourself.
still, a 1point loss bond is so.. so.. so.... :headbang:

ok, I'm confused. I just got this skill and cast it on myself, but it doesn't seem to be blocking any damage at all, and doesn't drain energy when I get hit. So what exactly does it do?

It does exactly what it is supposed to but if the damage delt to you is less than 5% your max life nothing happens. Only whe nyou would be hit for mor than 5% of your max life does Protective Bond kick in

Exactly what Emperor Tippy said. The reason it's useful is because it makes sure the target doesn't take a large hit, and it can block arbitrarily large amounts of damage. If someone has 300 health, 5% of that is 15. If that person gets hit for 5,000 damage while Protective Bond is on them, they'll only take 15 damage (and the monk will lose some energy).
Due to the energy requirements, if you want to run more than a couple of these you'll need some pretty commited ways to get back energy (i.e. Blessed Signet, Blood Offering, etc.)

Skill description wordings have to be taken into account here. Usually anything that says "damage" can be reduced by Prot bond. Sac spells while some may state they do damage, will just have a "lose x amount of HP" condition that should ignore prot bond. However a lot of these are based on Max HP so if it's a 105hp monks build the HP loss is going to hurt anyway.

12 attribute + 1 headpiece +3 rune +1 from an item
The item is the misleading part -- you need to get something that says, "+1 Protection Prayers (20%) chance", and keep casting it until you end up having a 17 attribute level, which you'll know because Protective Bond will say it only takes 1 energy.
